Donald Trump suggests purge-style day to tackle crime in the US

‘One rough hour – and I mean real rough…’

Former US President Donald Trump has sparked controversy after suggesting a “rough” day of violence to combat crime in the United States. The remark, made during a rally in Pennsylvania as part of his 2024 presidential campaign, has drawn widespread comparisons to the dystopian film The Purge.

While addressing crime in the country, Trump proposed a hardline approach that many have interpreted as a call for extreme measures. “One rough hour – and I mean real rough – the word will get out and it will end immediately, you know? It will end immediately,” he told supporters at the rally.

Comparisons to The Purge

Trump’s comments quickly went viral, with many drawing parallels to The Purge, a film in which crime, including murder, is legalised for one day each year. Social media users were quick to react, with some questioning whether Trump was seriously endorsing such a concept.

One user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote: “Did Trump just suggest The Purge? He implies that his idea for stopping crime is to allow for ‘one really violent day… I mean real rough.’” Another added: “Trump is literally proposing The Purge.”

Kamala Harris’ campaign seized on the moment, sharing the clip online with the caption: “Trump says his idea for stopping crime is to allow for ‘one really violent day’: ‘One rough hour, and I mean real rough…’”

Trump Campaign Responds

Amid the backlash, Trump’s campaign clarified that the remarks were not a formal policy proposal. Steven Cheung, the campaign’s communications director, told Politico that Trump’s comments were made in jest. He added, “President Trump has always been the law and order president and continues to emphasise the importance of enforcing existing laws. Otherwise, it’s all-out anarchy, which is what Kamala Harris has created in some of these communities across America.”

The former president has consistently positioned himself as tough on crime, a stance he has maintained throughout his campaign. However, his latest comments have attracted criticism for their provocative nature.

Election Tensions Rise

Trump’s remarks come just 36 days before the US presidential election, where he will face off against Democratic candidate Kamala Harris. With tensions running high, both campaigns are focusing heavily on crime and public safety as key issues.

The next major event in the lead-up to the election is the vice-presidential debate, set for Tuesday, where Tim Walz and JD Vance will square off. As the campaign enters its final weeks, comments like Trump’s continue to fuel debate on the country’s future direction under either administration.
