Concerns have been raised over the active recruitment of armed forces veterans by far-right extremist groups, with experts warning of significant risks posed by dangerous ideologies infiltrating the military and law enforcement.

A report by the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) has highlighted the alarming trend of far-right groups strategically targeting veterans through social media channels and charitable organizations. According to the report, there are “significant gaps” in identifying and addressing right-wing extremism within police and military ranks, posing a serious threat to national security.

The document points to numerous cases where individuals with far-right sympathies have been identified within security forces, raising concerns about the spread of radical ideologies. It emphasizes the vulnerability of veterans to extremist recruitment, citing a lack of support upon leaving the armed forces as a key factor.

Between 2019 and 2022, approximately 40 Army, Navy, and RAF personnel were investigated over alleged extremism, with 20 Ministry of Defence (MoD) figures referred to the Prevent program in 2019 and 2020. Of those referred, 18 were accused of far-right activities, indicating a troubling trend within the military.

The report also highlights the role of military training in shaping extremist views, citing instances of “dehumanizing training approaches” that perpetuate racist language and stereotypes. Disaffected veterans, lacking adequate support and grappling with mental health issues, are identified as prime targets for far-right recruitment efforts.
