The UK government is reconsidering a proposed ban on smoking in pub gardens following public backlash. Initially, the proposal aimed to restrict outdoor smoking across hospitality venues, including pubs, restaurants, and racecourses. This move faced strong resistance from pub owners and patrons, who argued it could harm businesses.

Revised Smoking Ban Focus

Instead of a blanket ban, restrictions may only apply near schools and hospitals. Health Secretary Wes Streeting called for a “national debate” on the impact of smoking, while Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty supports a broader ban in public outdoor spaces.

Potential Economic Impact

Industry experts raised concerns about the financial impact on pubs. The British Beer and Pub Association estimates that extending smoking bans to pub gardens could result in the closure of three pubs weekly, possibly totalling 800 venues over the next five years.

A Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson commented on the urgency to protect children and non-smokers from second-hand smoke’s dangers. “We are determined to protect public health by considering a range of measures to make the UK smoke-free.”

Evolving Legislation

While the proposed law has yet to be signed off, changes are expected in the coming weeks. Disposable vapes may also face a separate ban to tackle plastic waste from smoking products.
