President Donald Trump’s public friendship with Elon Musk hit a rough patch this week. Musk, once dubbed Trump’s “first buddy,” tore into Trump’s “big beautiful bill” on social media. Now Trump admits their bromance might be toast.
“Elon and I had a great relationship. I don’t know if we will any more, I was surprised,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.
Musk is now retweeting old posts made by the President.
Musk didn’t hold back. He posted on X that the bill carried a “MOUNTAIN of DISGUSTING PORK” and ripped out the EV and solar incentives while leaving oil and gas subsidies untouched.
“In the entire history of civilisation, there has never been legislation that [is] both big and beautiful. Everyone knows this!” Musk quipped.
📞 Trump’s theory
When asked about Musk’s criticism during a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Trump pointed fingers at dropped EV mandates and a blocked NASA nominee.

“Elon’s upset because we took the EV mandate, which was a lot of money for electric vehicles… I know that disturbed him.”
Trump also noted that Jared Isaacman, a Musk associate tapped to lead NASA, lost his nomination.
“He was a Democrat… we don’t have to appoint a Democrat,” Trump shrugged.
🚧 The bill and its fallout
Trump insists Musk knew every detail of the bill before it passed. He’s pushing Republican senators to sign on and wants it signed before July 4.
“He knew it better than almost anybody, and he never had a problem until right after he left.”
Musk fired back on X:

“False, this bill was never shown to me even once and was passed in the dead of night so fast that almost no one in Congress could even read it!”
🤑 Money matters
Musk poured nearly $290 million into Trump’s 2024 campaign after publicly endorsing him. Trump claims he’d still have swept Pennsylvania without Musk’s help. Musk disagreed.
“Without me, Trump would have lost the election,” Musk shot back.
🎭 “Trump Derangement Syndrome”
Trump chalked Musk’s turn to hostility up to missing the White House glitz.
“People leave my administration and love us, then they wake up and the glamour’s gone. They become hostile… Trump Derangement Syndrome, I guess.”
Even so, Trump noted Musk kept things civil—for now.
